Mr James Compton, of Queensland, has been appointed conductor of the Wanganui Garrison Band.

A Gisborne Press Association message announces the death of Mr Oswald Prince, the manager of the Gisborne Gas Company. He was associated with various sporting bodies. Constable E. H. Compton, who is stationed at Palmerston North, returned this morning from Ruawaro where he has been assisting with investigations into the Lakey mystery.

Rev. H. M. Smyth, vicar of St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Onehunga, has, owing to ill-health, resigned his charge as from February 28 next. He has been vicar of St. Peter’s for nearly thirteen years.

Chosen from 44 applicants from all over New Zealand, Mr John Millard, M.Sc., 8.A., has been appointed headmaster of the Hutt Valley School, in place of Mr H. P. Kidaon, who leaves at the end of the year to take up the position of principal at the Otago Boys’ High School. Mr Millard has been first assistant at the Hutt Valley High School for the past seven years and head of the department of mathematics and science.

The death has taken place at Rotorua of Mr Joseph William Webber, aged 69 years. Mr AVebber resigned the position of headmaster of the primary school of that town in 1912. He arrived in New Zealand in 1884 and was appointed teacher at the first school in Rotorua. He was later for several years on the staff of the Rotorua Chronicle. Mr Webber had been president of the Rotorua Bowling Club, and was secretary until within a few months of his death.

The death occurred at Auckland last week of Mr Albert Mcßeth, aged 80 years. He was, born near Marton, being’ the youngest of the eight sons of the late Mr and Mrs Mcßeth, who arrived in New Zealand in 1840. Starting sheepfarming with his father, Mr Mcßeth later farmed on his own account. In 1886 he married Miss Amelia White, who arrived in New Zealand in 1878. They, retired and settled in Avondale about four years ago. Mr Mcßeth is survived by his wife, one son, Mr Raymond Mcßeth, of Stratford, and a daughter, Mrs Stead, of Avondale.
