DOMINION COINAGE.
NOW LEGAL TENDER:. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Nov. 30. Commenting on a proclamation in tonight’s Gazette bringing the Coinage Act into operation from to-morrow, the Minister of Finance (Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates) states that, in terms of the Act, the New Zealand coins were made legal tender for payment of any amount not exceeding 40s. It should be understood, however, that, in the meantime, British coins will remain legal tender to a similar extent. After the change-over has been completed and the Government is satisfied that the whole of the Imperial coin lias been, withdrawn, action will be taken to declare British coins no longer legal tender in New Zealand. Australian silver coin was not legal tender and there had never been any legal authority for its circulation in New Zealand.
