The Auckland yield of fruit this season promises to be prolific and, although it is too early to prophesy with any certainty, it, is considered likely that the production of many varieties will be greater than that of last year. As a result of mild weather in the late winter and early spring the strawberry crop is well advanced a,nd considerable quantities of the berries are coming forward daily. The number of plants cultivated in the Auckland district is estimated to be in the vicinity of 3,500,000, or about the same as last year. Like most other farm products potatoes have been very cheap in Scotland for the last; two seasons, the choicest varieties selling at. £2 a ton and under. Considering the cost of labour and land this is a ruinous price,, and a writer in a Homo paper points out the value of potatoes for cattle, and argues- that they are much above roots, but have to be used judiciously. There is ’nothing- /can beat boiled potatoes for pigs, and in Ireland this is the stable diet. Mixed with Indian (maize) m eal with a liberal supply of milk, it is wonderful how quickly the healthy weaner is : converted into tho baconer of from 1201 b to 1401 b.
