Tho last of the fortnightly euchre parties organised by Miss ilenegban and hold throughout the winter months took place in I lie school room on Friday evening. The gatherings have been well patronised mid very much enjoyed, and Miss llcneghan is to be congratulated on the fad. that the sum of £lO has been raised to augment, the school funds. Owing to the busy time on the farms, it was considered advisable to discontinue Ihe functions for the lime being, and although much regret, was felt at the neeessily for doing this, all are looking forward In many more plea'ant evenings together next winter. Miss A. itoulston proved the winner of the ladies’ trophy, while three men played off for the men's prize, Mr A. Martin winning from Messrs Punn and Me. Kwcn. A dainty supper was served, and with Miss Vera Undshaw al. tho piano community singing was enjoyed until nearly midnight when all joined in the singing of “Aiiltl Lung Syne.” October proved an exceptionally dry month in Waiata. Mr K. W. brown's rain gauge registering only 1.71 ins. of rain for the month compared with 3.13m5. for the corresponding month of last year. Farmers were beginning to show concern at this dry spell so early in lint season, lint for the last lew days a warm, penetrating rain has fallen and the gardens and fields are. already showing a marked response. Agricultural work is in full swing now and the hum of the tractor can lie heard on all sides. The weather has proved very favourable and work seems to be well advanced for tlin lime of year, while up to the present there is every prospect, of satisfactory crops. Most sheep farmers are making arrangements fnr_ the shearing, while in some eases operations have already commenced.
