CHRISTCHURCH FIRE
DAMAGE ASSESSED. Per Press Association. CHRIS'J OMUiICH, Nov. 1. 'J’ho only sufferers by the big Jlcrcfonl Street firo* last night were Weston Pros, and Co., leather merchants, Andrews, Paly and Co., printers, etc., Chandler and Co., Ltd., and the Peneol Oil Co. These wore the only occupants of the building. The estimated loss on the building is approximately £7001). The insurances were £4700. Weston Pros.’ losses are estimated at between £15,000 and £17,000. Insurances on stock and plant were £11,500. Chandler and Co. lost stock estimated to be worth from £BOO to £IOOO, covered by insurance of £IOOO.
The only damage suffered by the Pcncol Oil Company was by water. A store room containing 2000 gallons of oil was not reached by the; flames. r l he stock was insured for £SOO. The main premises of Andrews, Paly and Co. were in an adjoining building, which was unharmed. 'lire firm used a portion of the destroyed building n.s a bulk store, where stock was damaged to the extent of £BOO to £IOOO. Tho total insurances of Andrews, Paty and Co. are £2OOO. It was at first Itolievcd that the firo originated in Weston Pros.’ workshop. The cause of the fire is still unknown, but Superintendent Warner, of the Eire brigade, said to-day he was satisfied the fire did not start on the top floor. It apparently originated in the paint shop at the rear of Chandler and Co.’s premises immediately above the point at which the fire was burning most fiercely when the outbreak was discovered.
