A BOMBSHELL.

RELIEF WORKS STOP. WHANGAREI DEVELOPMENT. WHANGAREI, Oct. 27. A veritable bombshell, which will have the effect of stopping all relief works within the town district, lias been dropped upon the Whangarei Borough Council. Recently the council applied to the Unemployment Board'for 25 men for six months for the purpose of forming a western outlet which would link up Central Avenue and Russell ltoad, and be used principally as a stock route. This application was refused by the board on the grounds that every available man was required for putting in a new access road to the small farm settlement at Kioreroa. The real sting in the board’s communication, however, was the notification that the borough’s concreting gang was to be switched over at the end of this week to the reading works at Onerahi. This gang, which comprises 14 married men, has been engaged constantly for the past 2i years, and lias laid approximately 11 miles of paving in the borough. It is understood that the board is willing to make unemployed men available for tlie purpose of forming the portion of the Kioreroa Road lying within tlie borough. When approached the Mayor (Mr W. Jones) intimated that he preferred not to make a statement at the present juncture. “All I can say is this,” he said, “no borough in New Zealand has spent its unemployment money more wisely than Whangarei.”
