On the east coast a gale is causing the worst storm experienced for 25 years. Hundreds of tons of cliff collapsed at Lowestoft sending gardens tumbling into the sea and leaving houses within a few feet of the cliff edge. Thirty feet waves washed the roof off the pier pavilion at Scarborough, where the seafront is littered with chimney pots. and tiles. Bridlington Bay is crowded with sheltering ships.
