RANGITIKEI
MARTON, Oct. 26. _ At to-day’s meeting of the Rangitikei Countv Council Cr. K. W. Dalrymple (chairman) presided. Prior to the commencement of business the chairman made reference to the loss sustained by Mr A. Way in the death of his wife. A motion of sympathy was carried in silence. There was a short-discussion on the undesirable influence of agitators at relief camps and the engineer was empowered to take action. The bulk of the relief workers, it was emphasised, were of a good type. The council approved of the Unemployment Board’s new “payment by results” policy, but the 'engineer said that it was not intended by the board to apply the policy to all work; in some cases it would be impracticable. The idea was to get better results for the public money being expended, the board being of the opinion that “payment by results” would encourage the good workers. The council approved of tentative proposals for tar-sealing about half a mile of Calico Line on the Marton side of Nga Tawa School. It was decided to direct the attention of the Marton and Taihape Borough Councils and the Bulls, Hunterville and Mangaweka Town Boards to the spread of ragwort in their towns and ask that steps be made to eradicate the menace. The traffic inspector (Mr H. J. Fowler) reported that 56 motor drivers’ licenses were issued during the month, bringing the total to date to 1674 and and the total fees to £4lB 12s 6d. Heavy, traffic license fees collected during the month totalled £27 15s 4d, bringing the total to date to £5Bl 4s. The third cycle race of the present series was won by H. Moss (40secs.) from W. Tolley (lmin.), with J. Tolley (scr.) 22 seconds further back. J. Tolley secured fastest time, doing the distance in 30min. 12secs.
