In the professional lawn tennis contest between the United States and France, America secured the victory by four matches to one. Barnes (United States) beat Plaa (France), 2—6, 6 —4, 6 —3, 6 —l. Tilden (United States) beat Cocliet (France), 6—3, 6—4, 6—2. Tilden and Barnes beat Cocliet and Plaa, 6—2, 4—6, 6—l. 6—4. Despite the fact that he is aged 40, as against Cochet’s 32, Tilden reproduced his old form and completely outplayed and outclassed the Frenchman, who failed to stand the strain of a terrifically fa.st first set. Cochet was unable to cope with the speed of, Tilden’s returns. PACIFIC TOURNAMENT. LOS ANGELES, Sept, 24. The Pacific south-west lawn tennis tourney has concluded. In the men’s doubles final Stoeffen and Vines beat Van Ryn and Gerald Stratford, 6 —2. 6 —3, 3—6, 6 —4. Turnbull and Miss Elizabeth Ryan beat Perry and Miss Mary T. Heeley, 6—3, 6 —i, in an exhibition match which was the concluding feature of the tournament. Turnbull’s extraordinary play completely overshadowed Perry. He won all five services with ease'and scored five clean aces; ho also played an invincible net game, making 'many points with chop shots. In tlie second set he won a love game on four serves. The first two were so hard that Miss Heeley and Perry were barely able to touch them; the last two were aces.
