MIGHTY UNIVERSE.
SECRETS OF THE HEAVENS. There are galaxies of stars, outside our universe, running away from us, Sir Arthur Eddington told the British Association for the Advancement of Science, and he added that the greater their distance the faster they more. The maximum traceable speed is 15,000 miles a second. Tire stars are also retreating from each other. “Nobody is sure,” said Sir Arthur, “whether the universe is always expanding or will continue to expand. Unknown circumstances might easily upset calculations. If the theory that the universe began from a congested mass is correct, the universe would be 200,000,000 years old, whereas the earth’s age is estimated to be at least 2,000,000,000 years. *. “Tlie late Lord Kelvin,” he said, “considered the earth was 50,000,000 years old, but we laugh at that today, and future scientists may similarly laugh at us.”
