WRESTLING.

CHAMPIONSHIPS TO-NIGHT. RUMBERG -PATTERSON MATCH TO-MORROW. It is universally agreed that Palmerston North’s amateur wrestlers arc-as good as those in any other part of the Dominion; apropos of this, a complaint by some Wellington competitors, recently, that they were more like professionals was made when some of the best of the Wellington amateurs wore beaten by_ local lads. Over 30 entries have been received for the elimination bouts of the amateur championships to bo staged to-night at tho ringside at tho Opera House, and for this event the nominal chargo of ono shilling will admit the public to the ringside scats. If there should bo only one entrant in any class and no contest, the P.N.W.A. will not award a trophy, but. may, if the entrant be class enough, call him tho champion and lie. may have tho honour of representing his district at the forthcoming New Zealand amateur championships. All heats and elimination bouts up to Iho semi-finals will bo fought out to-night, and four of tho best of tho finals will bo curtain-raisers for tho big 8-round professional match between Hal Rumbuvg and Jack Patterson. On the two previous occasions these big men have met in the ring—tho first at Auckland about three weeks ago, when critics affirrnnd that it was tho most sensational of many exciting matches held in the Queen City; the second last Wednesday, when Patterson was disqualified on a foul when ho was in a winning position; there have been real thrilling co itests. Patterson was giving the public, of Whangarci thrill after thrill when the police joined hands with the referee to make Patterson release a barred hold on Rumbcrg. With such a capable referee in the ring as Mr Alex Anderson, one cannot conceive of any situation arising that would require him to invoke tho aid of the police. Mr Anderson will see that neither contestant gets absolutely out of hand. Tho box plans for to-morrow’s match may bo seen at the Central Booking Office. PATTERSON BEATS VARGA. Per Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, Sept. 24. In a wrestling contest last night, Jack Patterson beat Count Varga by two falls to one. Varga gained a fall in the' third round with headlocks. Patterson evened in the fourth round with a spin and dump, and in the seventh Patterson gained a fall with a head-lock and press.
