WAR DANGER IN EUROPE.
MR CHURCHILL’S WARNING. A warning as to the clangor of war in Europe was uttered by Mr Winston Churchill in a speech at Theydon Bois, Essex, recently. “Nobody can watch the events which are taking place in Germany,” Mr Churchill said, “without increasing anxiety about what their outcome will be. At present Germany is only partly armed and most of her fury is turned upon herself. But already her smaller neighbours, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium and Denmark, feel a deep disqiuetude. There is grave reason to believe that Germany is arming herself, or seeking to arm herself, contrary to the solemn treaties exacted from her in her hour of defeat.
“I have always opposed this rearmament of Germany and have criticised in the House of Commons all this foolish talk of placing her upon some kind of equality with France. I denounced and derided the perilous policy to which we seemed inclined to lend ourselves of putting pressure upon the French to weaken their splendid army. The same people and the same perverse school of thought in England and the Urjited States that have already weakened the British Navy sought to weaken the French army. But the French most prudently refused to hearken to this hazardous advice, and the fact that they refused is the main foundation of the peace of Eur°“l National Government, and especially the Cabinet Ministers in charge of the Navy and Army and the Air Force, will realise how grave is tlieir responsibility. They are responsible, like the Ministers before the Wai, for our essential safety.’
