(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, Sept. 24. A packed hall greeted the committee responsible for the Uance and tug-of-war competition. held in the Druids’ Hall on Friday evening. The nett proceeds are to be devoted to the district nurse fund. Great credit for the splendid organising is duo the pulls, and was appreciatively spoken of the public must have been gratifying. In the final Koputaroa defeated Fitzhcrbcrt, this being the fourth meeting in finals between these two teams, Koputaroa winning each time. In presenting the prizes, Mr J. Mabey, the M.C., congratulated the winners and run-ners-up upon their splendid exhibition and explained that Koputaroa had offered to accede one inch to Fitzhcrbcrt in the final, but the handicap was not taken advantage of by the opposing tcanu Cheers were given for the sportsmanship of both teams, and both visiting captuins expressed pleasure at the hospitality extended to them. The District Nurse Committee are considering ways and means of purchasing a car, the nurse’s duties having become arduous and as the district is so scattered. She has made 1,236 visits in five months. Tho local golf season closed on Saturday, when the afternoon was devoted to competitions, presentation of trophies and a Canadian mixed foursome over nine holes. The president, Mr J. T. Bovis, said that members all regretted the necessarily early closing of the season, the < clerk of the weather having been very kind, and the continued sociability among members, together with the renewal of old acquaintances with sister clubs, had blended together for the success of the season. He again made reference to the generosity of Messrs Stern Bros, in placing their grounds at the disposal of the club, and stated that tho compliments received front visitors upon the splendid condition of the links must be very gratifying to them. Speaking from a presidential point of view, Mr Bovis said his task had been made easy by the untiring work of the secretary, Mr A. H. Morgan, and the hearty co-operation of the members, to whom he expressed thanks. Congratulations were extended to the winners of various club trophies, .as follow :—Men: Championship Cup (senior), FI. Bly.th, (junior), J. McLean; Shannon Cup (handicap), A. H. Morgan; Consolation Cup, L. S. Graham. Ladies: Senior Championship Cup, Miss Stern; junior Championship Cup, Miss Picard; Kohn Cup (handicap), Mrs Long; Senior Ringer Competition, Mrs T. Moynihan; Junior Ringer Competition, Mrs L. J. Mark; Worst Ball Foursome, Mrs Moynihan and Mrs VentrySmitli; Mixed Foursome (Mr and Mrs Ventry-Smith's trophy), Mrs Bovis and J. Mabey. During the afternoon competitions were won: Long drive, A. FI. Morgan; handicap drive, H. Blytli; approach and putt, J. Mabey; putting, H. Blytli; ladies’ long drive, senior, Mrs Moynihan; lpng drive junior, Miss Picard; handicap drive, Miss Picard; approach and putt, senior, Miss Stern; approach and putt, junior, Mrs H. Easton; putting, Mrs Morgan; novelty putt, Mrs Cronquest. Additional trophies won during tho season were: L.G.U. Medal (senior), Mrs Long; (junior), Mrs Easton; Morgan Brooch (C players) Miss G. Brown. Tho Canadian mixed foursome was won by Mrs Cronquest and Mr Bishop (Otaki). During the season Mrs C. Easton has. acted as hostess for all inter-club matches played on the local links and has also been of untold assistance to tho ladies of the club in many ways. On Saturday afternoon Mrs Morgan (the ladies’ president) took the opportunity of expressing the members’ appreciation and asked her to accept a handsome rose bowl as a token of esteem. Mrs Easton suitably replied, and said that what she had done had been a pleasure. On Saturday the Cycling Club held a road race from the Shannon Post Office to Buckley and back, finishing witli three laps on the Domain track. J. Anderson finished first, D. Satherley second, and J. Batt third. K. Miles (Otaki) made fastest’time, lffmins 20secs; Tantrum (Opiki), 20mins ssccs, and J. Anderson 20inins 29sccs. Members of the Cricket Club are at present working hard in getting their pitch in order for the coming season, for which there is very encouraging prospects. The friends of Mr W. N. Brown, of the railway staff, will regret to hear that lie was taken suddenly ill on Saturday, necessitating immediate medical attention. Mr A. Trcmcwan, who is still an inmate of the Palmerston North Hospital, is making satisfactory progress. The infant daughter of Mr and Mrs J. McLean, of Graham Street, is now making satisfactory progress after a very serious illness.
