PAHIATUA

PAIIIATUA, Sept. 21. Tho attendance at the annual meeting of the Pahiatua Anglers’ Club was excellent. Mr J. Hutton presided.- “The period under review can be regarded as having been most successful in every respect,” said the report. “Of particular satisfaction to the committee is tho fact that anglers of tho district took a groacr interest in tho affairs of tho club and the welfare of tho sport. This is manifest from the increased membership which stood at 31 financial members —probably a record for the club. As this number represents only a quarter of the license-holders of the district it is hoped that in tho forthcoming season tho proportion will be greatly increased. The club is indebted to tho following gentlemen for their generous donations: The president, Mr A. A. Vaughan and Mr A. J. Morgan. Four competitions wore hold during the season and these were keenly and enthusiastically contested. There aro many features of angling which might very well engage the attention of your club during tho forthcoming year, and which would assist towards improving tho conditions _ of angling and in consequence tho angler himself.” After some discussion Mr A. Pratt moved that the Wellington Acclimatisation Society bo advised that tho club considers tho allocation of fry entirely inadequate. Unless bettor treatment is received Pahiatua will sock transfer to tho Hawke’s Bay area. This was seconded by Mr F. Barraclough and carried unanimously. ' The balance-sheet showed a credit of £5 13s sd. Tho report and balance-sheet were then adopted. The election of officers resulted: Patron, Mr J. Robertson; president, Mr J. Hutton; vice-presidents, last year’s list with the addition of Messrs M. Prussing and J. 11. Brown; committee, all financial members; selector of teams for tho Stookvyell Cup competition, Mr A. Morgan. “A meeting of the general committee of the Pahiatua Bowling Club was held yesterday afternoon at the pavilion, the president (Dr H. Paterson) occuying tho chair. Mr E. Baxter was reappointed caretaker of the green. It was left to the chairman of the green committee (Mr Murphy) and the secretary as to when the caretaker is to start his duties. Tho same competitions and conditions as last year will be conducted with the proviso that tho selection committee have power to cancel one if there aro not sufficient entries. Two new members were elected, Messrs South, senr w and 11. H. Chinery. Tho action of the chairman of the green committee in obtaining a supply of top-dressing to mix with the lawn clippings and in having tho lawn mower repaired was endorsed. The date of the opening day will bo decided later by the president, the secretary and the green committee. A largo and willing band of members attended at the green yesterday afternoon constituting a very busy “working bee.” The green was cut and rolled, the edges and surroundings cleaned up and everything put in order ready for an early opening. Tho funeral yesterday afternoon of the late Mr John Francis Tredor, of Konini, whose dcatli followed an accident on Ridge Road, was very largely attended, there being many present from the Wairarapa where deceased formerly lived. The services at the Roman Catholic Church, Pahiatua, and at'the graveside, were conducted by ' Rev. Father A. Doherty, of Eketahuna, assisted by Rev. Father M. Cashman, of Pahiatua. The pall-bearers were Messrs D. Bncsnahan, A. Mahoney, D. M. Conway, M. Connor, A. Emerson (Masterton) and G. Harris (Wellington). Many beautiful floral emblems were placed at the graveside. There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Presbyterian Ladies’ Social Guild, held in St. Paul’s schoolroom. The president (Mrs K. L. Warren) presided. Two new members, Mrs Murch and Mrs Grantham, were welcomed. The members expressed pleasure with the splendid result of the recent gift shop.
