WRESTLING.

DOUBLE EVENT ON TUESDAY EVENING. Two nights next week have been arranged for wrestling, the first being the heats and semi-finals of the amateur championships set down for Monday, September 25th. The next night, Tuesday, the finals will be contested as preliminaries to the professional 8-round contest between Hal Rumberg and Jack Patterson. The Polico Shield, presented by the members of the local police force, which is at present held by Harold Benton, will be presented to the amateur wrestler, either local or from the outlying districts, who shows the most improvement in his form over the last twelve months. This may be won by a loser, as winning his bout or his class is not a condition by the donors. Tho main bout is being widely discussed by supporters of wrestling, Patterson’s methods particularly, but it is generally agreed that in big Hal Rumberg, who tips the scale at 16 stone 51bs, the Irish-American has met his match at the same tactics, and that the duties of a referee will be lightened by Rumberg’s presence as one of the gladiators. His confident “Leave it to mo” at Auckland when the referee was in trouble with Patterson clearly indicates his feelings in the matter. With two such stirring bouts between Rumberg and Patterson as precedents fans can look for another exciting night on Tuesday. The box plans open to-morrow at the Central Booking Office. WALKER BEATS PATTERSON. Per Press Association. WANGANUI, Sept. 21. George Walker beat Jack Patterson in a wrestling bout here to-night by two falls to one. The bout went to the fifth round, but it appeared as if Walker could have finished it in the first. Walker gained a fall in the third round, Patterson an easy fall in the fourth, and Walker back-slammed him in the fifth. It was explained in Palmerston North to-day that Patterson has been travelling to a very great extent recently and is, as a result, not as fit as he can be. When he comes to Palmerston_ North it will be after a less strenuous period.
