BRITAIN AND IRELAND. COAL IMPORT QUESTION. Received September 13, 10.35 a.m. LONDON, Sept. 12. • Irish Free State exports to Britain for the first eight months of 1933, as compared with 1932, show a marked decrease. The returns for 1932 and 1933 are, respectively, as follow: — ' Cattle, £5,367,000 (£2,800,000) ; swine, £784,000 (£194,000) ; bacon, £426,000 (£303,000) ; butter, £978,000 (£906,000); eggs, £1,482,000 (£873,000).
Britain’s exports to Ireland have been similarly reduced. For example: Coal, £1,147,000 (£565,000) ; wheat, meal and flour, £949,000 (£165,000) ; sugar, £464,000 (£47,000) ; beer, £135,000 (£109,000). A Dublin message states that, with the object of reducing British coal imports, the Free State Government is planning to develop the Arigna mines, on the borders of Roscommon and Leitrim. Four French mining engineers. are officially investigating the district’s mineral resources.
