PAHIATUA.

PAHIATUA, Sept. 12.

“Before proceeding with tlie business of the meeting,” said the Mayor, at the Borough Council meeting last evening, “I would like to move that a letter expressing the sincere sympathy of this council be sent to Mrs S. Bolton and family. I think that the loss of Mr Bolton to the community is a heavy one. Tho deceased gentleman was a man who had always taken an active interest in public affairs for very many years and as far as the borough is concerned I can say he worked harmoniously with the council. Ho was the type of man who is required for public bodies —a mail who could afford to give the time and a man who had the ability that he had for local body work. Ho had a knowledge and ability in local body work that very few possessed.” Gr G. H. Hodd, in seconding the motion, endorsed the Mayor’s remarks. The motion was carried, all standing for a moment in silence. The monthly meeting of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in the County Council Chambers, Mrs J. D. Piper (president) presiding.. Apologies for absence were received front Mesdames 11. 11. Miller and W. F. Day. Votes of sympathy were passed to Mrs S. Bolton and family, and to Mr Gordon, whose wife, the late president of the Taihape branch, had been killed in an accident, all present standing in silence. Letters of thanks were received from two persons who had recently received help from the division. Mrs Piper read the remits passed at tlie recent conference. It was decided to hold the next social afternoon in November when it is hoped that Mrs C. C. Jackson will visit the branch, and also that a good lecturer would be available. Mesdames W. Fergus and W. D. Harris carried out tho duties of hostesses. _ A party of boys from the Pahiatua District High School, in charge of Mr G. L. Stafford, visited the Pahiatua Co-operative Dairy Compan3 T ’s factory at Mangamutu, The manager, Mr 1,. Hcayns, showed tlie visitors round tho factory and explained the various operations taking place from time to time in the manufacture of cheese.
