GLEN OROUA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) GLEN OROUA, Sept. 12. Tho usual fortnightly euchre party and dance of the local Social Club was held in the hall on Friday night, there being a very good attendance. The ladies’ euchre I prizes were won by Mrs L. Thompson and Mrs Pearson (runner-up), while the men’s prizes went to Messrs F. Farmer and D. Sullivan (runner-up). A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr W. Scott and Mrs H. McMillan. The usual professional orchestra supplied the music for the dance, for which Mr L. 11. Ihlo was M.C. Residents of the district will be sorry to learn that Mrs J. Boyce was recently admitted to a hospital in Palmerston North to undergo an operation. Mr T. Saunders, who has been an inmate of a hospital in Palmerston North for the past three weeks, is progressing favourably, and expects to return home shortly. The sympathy of tho residents of the district will be extended to Mr D. Davcy, in the loss sustained by ijic death of his father, which occurred at Himatangi. Mr and Mrs _E. F. Spry and family, who have been residents of the district for some years, have left to take up their residence at Tangimoana. Mr Spry was a valued member of- the School Committee, and was also a well-known and popular referee of the To Ivawau Rugby Sub-Union. Mr and Mrs W. T. Sadd and family, who recently left Opiki, have taken up their residence in this district. Mr L. Poupard has returned home after attending tho Now Zealand boxing championships at Blenheim. Mr Poupard, who is wellknown locally as honorary instructor to tho Glen Oroua and Rongotea Boxing Clubs, was accompanied by N. Wheeler (Glen Oroua), featherweight champion of (ho Manawatu, who was taking part in tho championships. The prevailing epidemics of- influenza and mumps have made their presence felt in this district. The heavy easterly gale winch extended over the week-end and continued unabated until last night was responsible for damage to power and telegraph lines and also did considerable harm to gardens. Tho usual meeting of the school committee was held in tho schoolroom last night, when there wore present Messrs W. Boswell (chairman), J. Hcrdman (secretary), W. Scott, E. Spry and S. G. Parlane (head teacher). An apology was received from Mr J. Nolan, who was unable to bo present owing to illness. Correspondence was received from the secretary of the Palmerston North Schools’ Dental Clinic advising that primer pupils of the Glen Oroua School would be admitted for treatment. A vote of thanks was accorded Messrs J. Glover and Sons, Rongotea for ; a donation of basketball rings to the school, i Accounts totalling £3 9s 8d wore passed I for payment. The head teacher reported that eleven entries had been received for mangold growing and four for calf rearing in the Boys’ and Girls’ Club competitions. The 70-odd macrocarpa trees planted on Arbor Day all appeared to he doing well. Owing to his removal from the district, Mr Spry tendered his resignation as a member of the committee. The resignation was accepted with regret, and the hope expressed that Mr Spry would bo returning to the district at some future time. '
