WELLINGTON, Sept. 12. An intense depression covers New’ Zealand, barometers being low, but rather uniform over the Dominion and higher all around it. Over eastern Australia there has been a considerable rise of pressure. Forecast: Light to moderate, but later freshening, southerly w’inds. Weather: Cool, changeable and at times misty. Rain likely east of the ranges, but only light scattered showers to the westward. Seas moderate, but rising.

WIND AT LEVIN

LITTLE DAAIAGE DONE

LEVIN, Sept. 11. After a long absence of heavy wind in Levin, the spell w T as broken on Saturday by an easterly’ which by night had increased to intermittent gale force, these conditions continuing over the week-end. This morning the wind had moderated somewhat. At times it had veered to the north and occasionally to the south-east, and at least one gust yesterday morning came from a westerly direction. No serious damage has been reported, but fruit trees and gardens have suffered. Early on Sunday morning an interruption was caused on_ the power line on Gladstone Road owing to a branch of a pine tree falling across the line. It broke one of the wires and damaged two others, necessitating a new complete span of wires being put in. This work w r as completed before 8 a.m. and the power restored. In Queenwood Road a small cowshed w’as demolished. Several instances of trees being uprooted are reported.
