WAIATA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) WAIATA, Sept. 11. Oil Friday night another of the fortnightly euchre parties was held in the schoolroom and was, as usual, well attended. Play was proceeded with, resulting in the ladies’ trophy being won by Mrs Fitzwater and tho men’s by Mr R. Harrison. Miss A. Roulston won the ladies’ consolation prize, having previously tied with Mrs C. Goro and Misses V. and J. Rodshaw. Tho men’s consolation u cut to Mr _ A.. Clifford. After the prizes had been distributed Miss Hennghan asked for tho opinion of the company as to whether this was to be tho final gathering for tho season for whether another evening should be hold. On being put to the vote it was decided unanimously to continue the evenings _ a little longer arid the next will be held in a fortnight’s time. Supper was then served by tho ladies. The rainfall for August, as recorded by Mr R. W. Brown, was 2.35 ins. as compared with 2.99 ins. in August last year. The Juno and July falls wore 2.01 ins. and 2.76 ins. respectively, while for the previous year 4.98 ins. and 1.51 ins fell in the corresponding months. Thcso figures go to show that Waiata’s rainfall is less than that of Palmerston North.
The local farmers are taking advantage of tho splendid. spring weather, and agricultural work is well advanced. Boisterous winds during the week-end did serious havoc to gardens, fences, and trees, while one resident’s wash-house suffered severe damage through a treo falling and smashing through the roof. Tho roofing iron from a back porch was also swept away.
