UNEMPLOYED IN CITY.

RELIEF WORKS IN HAND. In his report to the City Council, last evening, the city engineer (Mr J. It. Hughes) said that the total number of men employed under the No. 5 scheme for the month of August had been 615. The following works were in progress: —Road widening, Vogel Street; Main Street, forming watertables on the railway side of the road; Takaro Park, levelling works on reserves; works at cemeteries Nos. 1 and 2, metal pit and depot; works at Manawatu and Northern bowling greens; filling and levelling the pit adjoining the Terrace End School; levelling Albert Street domain ; various works at city school grounds.
