WOMEN’S WORLD

Mrs H. G. Roff, of Lower Hutt, is visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs H. E. Whiteman, Rangftikei Line.

Sir and Mrs - F. Gowing, of Palmerston North, are paying a short visit to Wellington.

.The many friends of Mr A. Pickin, of 51 Bonrke Street, will regret to learn of the death of his brother Harry, which occurred at Levin yesterday. Mrs J. Walker, of Monrad Street, who underwent a serious operation in a private hospital some time ago, has now recovered sufficiently to permit of her returning to her home. Her many friends will wish her a speedy and complete recovery. The death . lias taken place at Levin of Mrs Ellen Penelope Brown, relict of the late Mr T. Brown. The deceased had enjoyed reasonably good health, despite the fact that she had entered her 87th year on the day of her demise. Mrs Brown was horn in England. Shortly. after her marriage to Mr Brown, who was then a bank officer in London, they came to the colonies on account of the- failing health of the latter. They spent about two years at Mildura, Victoria, where they had taken up a holding on the newly irrigated farm lands, and in 1892 came to New Zealand, almost immediately after which they settled in Levin, the late Mr Brown taking up a clerical position at Prouse’s sawmill. With the .exception of 2) years in Wellington, the late Mrs Brown’s 41 years in New Zealand were spent in Levin, where she became well-known as a worker in the Anglican Church and in connection with the Levin Horticultural Society, of which she was a foundation member.

Few men preparing themselves for the legal protession attempt to go further than securing the degree of bachelor of laws, a degree which is accepted as a standard for admission both as a barrister and solicitor (says an exchange). When a woman goes so far as to take a legal degree, the event is at least rare, but for one to take the degree of Master of Laws, as was the case with Miss Julia M. Dunn, of Wellington, at the Victoria University College graduation ceremony on Friday evening, it is decidedly exceptional, and, it is believed, unprecedented in Wellington. Miss Dunn, who is a daughter of Mr Alexander Dunn .has shown extraordinary enthusiasm for a legal career, and has applied herself to her studies with diligence.

WEDDING. MALCOLM—FAGAN. A wedding of interest to many residents of the Sandon and surrounding districts was solemnised at Springdale Church, Waitoa, on Wednesday, April 26, when Vera Kathleen, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs A. F. Fagan, Waitoa, was married to Donald Petrie, third son of Mr and Mrs C. R. Malcolm, of Waitoa. The ceremony was conducted by Rev. H. B. Hughes, Te Arolia. The bride, who entered the church on the arm of her father, looked graceful in an ankle-lengtli frock of ivory lucretia crepe, made with shaped rucked bodice attached to a six-gored skirt and ivory lace coatee. She carried a bouquet of white chrysanthemums and white dahlias tipped with pink and maidenhair fern. Her veil, which formed a short train, was of ivory embroidered net arranged with a coronet of orango blossoms. Two bridesmaids were in attendance, Miss Dolly Fagan (chief), sister of the bride, and Miss Joyce Fagan (Morrinsville), cousin of the bride. Air Gordon Malcolm and Mr Bruce Malcolm, brothers ofthe bridegroom, carried out the duties of best- man and groomsman respectively. At the reception which followed a beautiful three-tiered wedding cake, which was much admired, was made by Mrs H. J. Fagan, Sanson, aunt of the bride, and iced by Miss P. Fagan, Sanson. WEDDING ANNIVERSARY. Mr and Mrs John M. Mcßride, of Levin, on Saturday celebrated the 54th anniversary of their . wedding, ; when they were the guests of Mr and Mrs W. Woodroofe, of Paliiatua Street, Palmerston North. They were the recipients of many congratulations with best wishes for continued health. Mr Mcßride, who will be 81 years of age in August, hails from Belfast, Ireland. In 1873 he went to Canada for about two years, and on his return to Ireland .booked his passage to New Zealand in the ship British Empire, which arrived at Auckland in 1875. The trip occupied 75 days. With an extensive knowledge of engineering behind him, he secured his first job in New Zealand at a sawmill at Cabbage Bay, Coromandel Peninsula, but within twelve months went south to Port Chalmers and worked on farms in Southland. There he met his future wife, whom- lie married in 1879. Together they settled at Wyndham, where Mr Mcßride was engaged in road contracting and bridge building. They remained in the south till 1892, when they came north to a farm at Linton. Those were the days when the swamp lands of the now fertile Makerua plains were feet deep in water. Nine years later they removed to Kelvin Grove and then to Stratford, retiring in 1919. Mr and Mrs Mcßride then took up their home in Levin. • . _ Their family consists of six daughters. Their son succumbed to war wounds after being invalided back to New Zealand. The daughters are Mesdames W. Woodroofe (Palmerston North), Pritchard (Ohingaiti), H. Bowling (Kuku), W. H. Harris (Stratford, S. Barron (Te Arolia) and Eynon (Morrinsville). There are 31 grandchildren and eight great-grand- children.
