TRADE WITH EAST.
SYDNEY, Feb. 8,
More than 100 delegates, representative of the Federal and State Legislatures, and commercial, shipping, manufacturing, banking and other interests, met in conference to-day to deal with the question of extending Australia’s trade with the East. A feature of the discussion was some strong criticism by Mr W. P. Chen, Chinese Consul-General, concerning the trade handicaps imposed by Australia’s high tariff and various aspects of the migration laws which operated harshly against Chinese merchants and their families.
The conference appointed committees to report to-morrow.
