EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD. DECEMBER 20, 1902. The House of Representatives had passed a vote for the erection of a new brick Rost Office at Palmerston North and plans were to be prepared after the holidays. The Wanganui Education Board had decided to make an inspection at Himatangi with the view to erecting a school. . At the annual meeting of the Palmerston North sub-branch of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society it was reported that 45,000 rainbow and 20 000 brown trout fry had been liberated in the Tiritea and Kalruterawa streams during the year. The Hokowhitu lagoon had been protected as a game reserve and English mallard and swans had been liberated. The Manawatu Racing Club had decided to add to its autumn programme a 6 furlong race to be called the Manawatu Stakes, open to 2 and 3-year-olds, weight for age, the prize to be 100 sovereigns. New appointments to the Upper House were those of Hons. F. Arkwright, W. C. Smith, G. Jones and R. Rg€V€B. The Budget for the State of Victoria was reported to show a deficit of £953.000 and new taxation was expected to produce £250,000.
