PAHIATUA, Deo. 19. Tho Christmas tree concert and party for tho children of tho Hainua School was held last week in tho Hamua Hall when a very largo number attended. The children spent a jolly evening, Father Christmas being in attendance. At tho conclusion of the servico at the Methodist Church last evening, the opportunity was taken by Rev. W. B. Pickering to inalto a presentation to Mr G. L. Stafford, M.A., and Miss O. Patchctt on the occasion of thoir approaching marriage. Tho gift comprised a handsome silver tea servico, accompanied by a beautiful bouquet. Laudatory speeches concerning the popularity of the couple and tho high esteem in which they are held, also thoir willingness and very devoted services in many of the church s difficult activities were mado by tho minister, also by Messrs P. E. Wingfield (on behalf oi the congregation), J. Gower Chambers (in tho absence of Mr J. J. Boagey, for tho choir) and 0. Johnsop (circuit officials) The presentation was made on behalf of the circuit, the choir, Sunday School and Endeavour Society The December meeting of the Bal lance Women's Institute was held on Wednesday afternoon, Mrs McKenzie (vice-president) presiding. Correspondence was read from Miss A. M. Sargent in connection with the pageant to bo held in Fobiuary, and Miss McMillan, of Massey College. Mr A W Hamilton was the lecturer for the afternoon. His talk on gardening held inembors very interested o,nd the time seemed all too short. A number of questions were asked by members and Mr Hamilton’s helpful advice will prove a boon to flower and vegetable growers. The competition, “Article suitable for a Christmas present not to cost more. than 2s ” was won by Mrs McKenzie with a cigar case made in brnsswork, Miss Jones being second. Mrs Hamilton v-as judge. The hostesses were Mrs Watt, Mrs Coppell and Mrs McKenzie. At tho Mangamutu Women s Institute meeting, Mrs Hamilton presided. A let-
ter was read from tho Mayor of Wairoa thanking tho institute for tho case of crockery which had been forwarded, and Mrs Heayns, Mrs Brechin and Miss Daldy wero thanked by members for. packing and despatching it. It was decided to hold tho next meeting of the institute in February. This will also bo tho annual mooting and arrangements will then be finalised for the birthday party to lie held in March. Mr South, of Pahiatua, gave an interesting and instructive demonstration of cake-icing, for which he was accorded a hearty vote of thanks, this being carried by ucclamation. The competition for a plate of four pikelets was won by Mrs Heayns. Mrs Curtin and Mrs McDonald woro in charge of a bring and buy stall, by which tho institute funds will profit considerably. Votes of thanks to tho hostesses, Mrs Bcnnotto ar.ti Mrs Morinrty. followed by the singing of the National Autlieni, terminated a very succossfui meeting.
