THE CITY SCHOOLS.

BOARD CHAIRMAN IMPRESSED. Mr E. F. Hemingway, chairman of the Wanganui Education Board, who recently visited the schools in Palmerston North, had some interesting c.cmment to make regarding them at the monthly meeting of the board on Wednesday. Mr Hemmingway said lie had been struck with the enormous amount of improvement work that had been carried out by the Palmerston North committees, the value of which ran into thousands of pounds. Areas which were formerly unsightly wastes had been iiansformecl into beautiful grounds and 'Maying fields, made attractive with flowers and shrubs. The thanks of the beard were due to the committees, who were deserving of every encouragement. During his visit to Palmerston Nortn, Mr Hemingway said, he had been assisted by Colonel J. H. Whyte, who had visited every school with him. lie would like to express his warm appreciation of the courtesy and kindness shown him by Colonel Whyte during his visit. Both Hokowhitu and Palmerston North Central Schools asked the board for high-diving boards for their baths. “These two schools have built magnificent baths that have not cost, the board a penny piece. In recognition of their work,. I think we might pay for the boards,”, said Mr Hemingway. “I don’t want to call up old history, but some time ago I asked for seating accommodation at Glen Oroua baths, and I was turned down,” said Mr J- K. Hornblow. Mr J. S. Tingey asked if tl.eie bad been any donations or subsidies ior the Hokowhitu or Central baths." Colonel Whyte said that the Hokowhitu Committee had done all tho wo. k themselves, and he understood the Central School had done the same. It was decided to grant the diving boards.
