OFFICIAL RESIDENCE.
FOR AUSTRALIAN MINISTER. EXAGGERATED DESCRIPTION. Received December 15, 10.15 a.m. SYDNEY, Dec. 15. An exaggerated description of the palatial character of the Australian official residence in Ennismore Gardens, London, has appeared in Australia, suggesting that it is a “white elephant” needing a dozen servants to run it properly, while Mr S.. M. Bruce is credited with possessing a sound proof study. The fact is that Mr and Mrs Bruce are unlikely to live there until January when Mrs Bruce recovers from her illness. Mr Bruce told the Press Association that the house is not a “white elephant.” The High Commissioner was quite capable of maintaining it in normal times. He admitted that it would probably be necessary to reduce the staff to seven, “but- I can assure you that the study is far from sound proof.”
