SCHOOL SPORTS

RUSSELL STREET SCHOOL. EXCELLENT PERFORMANCES. With an up-grade track and a head wind, competitors at the annual sports meeting of the Russell Street School were confronted witli a real test yesterday afternoon, and the events produced some young athletes of distinct promise. Proceedings were watched by a large number of spectators, who delighted in tho enthusiasm displayed by the competitors, who wero compelled to race under championship conditions, no handicaps being allocated. The long programme was run off most expeditiously under tho direction of the headmaster, Mr F. C. Campbell, who carried out the duties of supervisor, and Mr C. Stagpoole, as starter, the latter offieiM getting his fields away on even terms in practically every instance. Messrs D. Morrison, Sweetman and Rn.bone fulfilled the duties of judges; Mr F. T. Vasev was time-keeper; while Miss E. Tankersley was steward for the girls and Mr H. Mountfort for the boys. Misses Park and Bcrndston were the record stewards, while Alison Seifert, Marjorie Pirie. Ken Perrin and Stan Pliillipps acted n.s messengers. Following is the programme.—

At the conclusion of the sports Dir A. J. Phillipps, chairman of the school committee, complimented the teaching staff on the manner in which the programme had been carried through and extended the compliments of the season to all prior to calling on Mrs Phillipps to present the certificates to tho successful competitors. Tho two Herbert Smith Trust Cups, which had been awarded to the champion houses, were accepted by B. Coombs, on behalf of the Blue House, the champion girls’ team, and by N. Adamson, on behalf of the winning boys’ team. The opportunity was also taken by Mr W. L. Fitzhorbert, as president of the Manawatu Life-Saving Society, to present to tlie school tho shield which it had won in that branch of sport last season. Mr Campbell thanked the members of the committee for their assistance and for the enjoyable day they had given the pupils, and called on the children to give three cheers for the generous assistance rendered by tho committee and tlie residents. Dir Campbell also, read apologies regretting their inability to attend from Dll' J. A. Nash, DI.P., Colonel J. H. Whyte and Mr DI. H. Oram (Education Board members) and Mr W. G. Black, (chairman of tlie Central School Committee). The children were then . treated to lolly scrambles and to afternoon tea, as were the parents and visitors in tho interior of the building.

COLLEGE STREET SCHOOL. A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. Warm sunshine favoured the very enjoyable sports held yesterday by the College Street School on the grounds adjacent to the new building. There was a good attendance of parents and interested spectators, and a large programme of events was decided. The sports were under the efficient direction of the headmaster (Mr W. A. Swinbourn) and the staff, assisted by Messrs C. Turnbull, F. Wollerman, I. Griffiths, F. Andrews and Smith. Afternoon tea arrangements were in the charge of Mrs Wollerman, assisted by members of the

ladies’ committee. The stall for the sale of ice creams was under the supervision of Mesdames G. Watchorn and Huntingdon, and that for sweets was controlled by Mesdames Edwards and Worboys.
