FLED FROM TE KOOTI.
DEATH OF ELDERLY NATIVE,
GISBORNE, Dec. 8.
A link with To Kooti massacre in Poverty Bay is recalled by the death at Rangitukia, on tho East Coast, of a highly respected old native, Hori Waikari, at the age of 90 years. His long life had been unusually full of exciting adventures and incidents, the most notable being his escape from the vengeance of To Kooti and his followers when the Maori rebel escaped lrom Chatham Islands and made his way to Gisborne. At the time of the massacre, Waikari, with others, was hiding in a house when Te Kooti knocked at the door, Waikari eluding his pursuers by junip- , ing from the second storey of the house to a haystack. He subsequently made his way to the East Coast, but later, when the Ngatiporou visited Poverty Bay to engage in. the then thriving grass seed industry he accompanied them as one of the tribal fighters to defend the honour of his tribe against local stalwarts.
