Two Penge (England) traders demonstrated recently that the age ot chivalry is not dead. Mr Lurkess, a newsagent, and Mr J. Smith, ft chemist, were both nominated for one vacancy on tho Penge Council, t together with Mrs F. Mitchell, wife of a local bank manager. The two men withdrew and allowed Mrs Mitchell to be returned unopposed. She is tho first woman to sit on the council.
