THE WEATHER

A weak anti-cyclone has been passing to the north, while a deep depression has moved off Australia on to the Tasman Sea. Variable but northerly winds soon prevailing and freshening; a change to southerly probable in the far south to-day, and later extending northward. Rough seas about Cook and Foveaux Straits and rising south of Cape -Egmont; elsewhere moderate in New Zealand waters. Strong northerly winds backing shortly to southerlies, and seas rough in the Eastern Tasman Sea. Weather mainly fair at first, with rising temperatures, but soon becoming unsettled in western districts, with rain developing and fairly general rain probable within the next 24 to 36 hours.

CLOUDY AND UNSETTLED.

The Government meteorologist telegraphed to-day : —The indications are for northerly winds strong to gale, and backing by west to south after about 24 hours. The weather appears likely to be cloudy and unsettled. Rain is probable and will be heavy in places. The barometer is falling. MANAWATU RIVER GAUGE. Noon. —lft. Sins.
