CONVENT SCHOOL.

BREAKING-I/P CEREMONY

DISTRIBUTION OF AAVARD3,

There was a large attendance at the breaking-up ceremony and distribution of prizes (already published) at the large assembly hall of the Convent School yesterday afternoon, and subsequent to the ceremony the visitors partook of afternoon tea on the lawn of the beautiful grounds. Very Rev. Monsignor MacManus thanked the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs A. E. Mansford) tor gracing the occasion with their presence when there was great pressure on their time during a period of such anxiety as had never before fallen upon the citizens. They had come to join in the congratulations to all at the close of a very successful year—a kindness which haa been characteristic of the Mayor’s term of office. On behalf of the teachers and children he cordially welcomed them. Monsignor MacManus then read the annual report (already published), and called upon the Mayor to distribute certificates.

The Mayor expressed appreciation c. the invitation extended to him to be present, and for tlie welcome. He commented that the Mayoress and himself were fulfilling their duties the same as other citizens and were doing their best. He considered that the community would soon be out of their difficulties if ali faced up to the crisis. He congratulated the Convent School upon its beautiful surroundings and said it was impossible in such an environment for pupils not to do their best. He wished all a full measure of success in their attack upon the prizes of life and urged them never to neglect the opportunities of making friendships. The richest prize which the world had to bestow was that of really true friendship. He was confident that each pupil would reflect great credit upon the teachers and the school.

Sports trophies were then presented "by Mr Mi Hyland, who said all were very jealous of the school and very proud off its teachers. All would agree that those sentiments had not been misplaced. He thanked Messrs Savage and Merritt for donating special trophies, and congratulated the winners. Cheers for the Mayor and Mayoress terminated the gathering.
