THE DOG NUISANCE.

(To the Editor.) Sir,- —As your correspondent “Contented” thinks that everyone who does not like walking down polluted streets is a dog-hater, 1 had better give him a few facts about the writer. In the first place, I am a he and was reared on a sheep farm on which my father kept 14 dogs. Whilst in Dunedin 1 paid £5 reward for a fox-terrier that Had become lost. Rather than sell a beautiful Alsatian when I went to England, I gave it to a friend who I knew would be kind to it. I now have on order a cocker spaniel. So much for an alleged dog hater. . Now, if there has been no dog nuisance in Palmerston North for the past 13 years, can “Contented” tell me why that particular by-law was passed P I was not aware that I had classed “all” dogs as filthy creatures; as- a matter of fact I am well aware of the old saying that “a dog is only the symbol of its master.” I have often admired a beautiful collie that is often down town with a lady. Never once have I seen this beautiful creature create a nuisance. Whoever owns it is to be congratulated on the way it has been trained. lam indeed very sorry for any man who suffers either from weak eyesight or a lack of civic pride. I am afraid “Contented” has both. Now “Contented” I will tell you what we will do.' We will get a “Standard” reporter to take a quiet stroll around the Square and up Cuba Street, he to get the opinion of a few business men en route. If he finds there is no dog nuisance, then I will baud him £1; if he finds there is you pay him £l, the money to be handed over to charity. Now, lam sure you will admit that that is a fair offer.

Since being in Palmerston North I have seen enough of the “Standard” men to accept their decision as final. Since I am not a lover of rushing into print, especially when the occasion demands a nom-de-plume, this will be my final letter on this subject.—Yours faithfully, FED UP.
