SWIMMING

MANAWATU CENTRE. ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Manawatu Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association was held last evening, Mr A. D. Campbell, the president, occupying the chair. Also £ resent were Messrs S. Riddell and . Smith (Terrace End), C. McKenzie and L. G. Berry (Central), R. Milverton (Hokowhitu), E. J. Werry (R.L.S.S.), W. Schwarz (educational officer), R. Haddon and J. Coates (Y.M.C.A.), F. R. Lewis (Apollo), P. Robbie (Dannevirke), O. Sporle (reilding), It. Bosworth (Palmerston North) and W. Eyre (secretary). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs J. Fahey and G. Fitzpatrick (Feilding). The annual import (published in the “Standard” last evening) was adopted. The educational officer (Mr W. Schwarz), in his report, apologised for the delay in sending out the certificates ; this had been caused by n shortage and the necessity for printing a further supply. He congratulated the Terrace End School on having highest number of awards for the fifth successive season, and traversed the various awards won during the year. Local swimmers lxad competed with a fnir measure of success at the national meeting in Wellington. Mr Schwarz extended his thanks to all teachers and others who had rendered assistance during the year. NEED FOR STIMULUS. Mr Campbell, reviewing the reports, said that there was a great deal for which to be gratified, the efforts of Miss P. Sporle and Mr L. Smith being particularly praiseworthy. In Palmerston North tlrere were great facilities with eight cold water pools and also the help from the teachers, but there was not sufficient progress being made in competitive swimming. This was probably due to the weather, or possibly to the lack of co-ordination between the various clubs, said Mr Campbell. If there were one tepid pool, and he suggested the municipal bath might be heated, the art would bo considerably adyanced in the city. The one carnival had, fortunately, shown a profit, but the attendances latterly had not been as good as in the past, due, possibly, to the lack of competition. “We have the talent and the baths, but we do not seem to get the cohesion and results we might expect,” said Mr Campbell. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, Mr A. E. Mansford; president, Mr A. D. CampbelL; vicepresidents, Mrs E. A. Fisher, Messrs A. J. Graham W. C. Collier, E. E. Short, G. H. Neal, A. R. McKegg and presidents of the affiliated clubs: chairman of executive, Mr Campbell, hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr W. Eyre; hon. auditor, Mr N. I. Nielsen; local officer, Mr F. R. Lewis; starter, Mr J. Fahey; water polo referee, Mr P. Robbie ; instructor and selector, Mr Robbie ; handicapper, Mr E. Persson: diving judges, Messrs W. Schwarz, G. H. Neal and W. C. Collier; educational officer, Mr W. Schwarz; representative on New Zealand Council, Mr A. R. Jacobson; executive committee, Messrs W Schwarz. 0. Sporle, P. Robbie, L. Smith and R. Haddon, together with the chairman and secretary.

CERTIFICATE AWARDS

There was a protracted discussion in regard to the advisability of continuing the award of certificates, or replacing tlrem with prize money. Members generally spoke in opposition to providing trophies, 1 ‘pot-hunting being sttongly condemned by several speakers. “I think it is one of the troubles with sport nowadays,” commented Mr Schwarz, when referring to the award of trophies, stating that certificates furnished permanent records. Mr McKenzie thought that trophies might stimulate the sport. It was decided that the championship awards still be made by certificates, which, in future, are to be framed to add to their dignity. GENERAL.

The Central Swimming Club (colours yellow and black) was granted affiliation to the centre. .... The arrangement of carnival dates during the season was referred to the executive for consideration. The secretary (Mr Eyre) was accorded an honorarium in appreciation of his valuable work to the centre. A vote of appreciation was accorded Mr Persson for writing out the certificates during the season. Tire Dannevirke Club wrote complaining of the handicapping. It was decided that the letter be received, the meeting being of the opinion that Mr Persson performed his duties very satisfactorily and could hardly be. expected to be thoroughly acquainted with the members of such clubs as Takapau, etc.
