BEAUTIFYING WORK.

SHOWGROUNDS IMPROVEMENTS.

TREES AND ROCKERY.

Beautifying work which has been undertaken recently, is effecting a marked improvement to the Palmerston North Showgrounds and, with activities nearing completion, they should be in most attractive order for the Royal Show fixture next month. The scheme of improvements which has steadily been pursued this year is perhaps more extensive in its nature than any carried out for a considerable time. An entirely new feature is the construction of a rockery adjacent to the turnstiles at the main entrance. The rockery is to accommodate suitable plants, and is expected to have a delightful appearance when completed, as well as being a decided ornamentation to the entrance. Some time ago the Cuba Street frontage of the Showgrounds was planted with a variety of native trees and shrubs. These have now been neatly fenced in for the whole distance, averting' the possibility of their suffering any damage. On the left side of the main drive in the grounds three oak trees have been planted in a small avenue, and are neatly railed in for protection. A very pleasing garden enclosure has been made adjoining the Plunket and ladies’ rest rooms. The old grandstand which was recently moved to a new location is now being painted and, with renovations which have been carried out, will be in splendid order for the Show. It should be a much sought after vantage point from which to view ring competitions in the oval. . Workmen are engaged m clearing the grounds and trimming grass Work has also commenced on the erection of two new pavilions to porvide increased accommodation for stock classes at the Royal Show. For the additional building for sheep a site has been selected between the plantation near the band rotunda, and the Pascal Street side of the grounds. The pavilion for pigs is going up on the eastern side of, and parallel to, the existing one, and encroaches on to the end of the No. 4 football El These buildings are being erected with all possible expedition, as they must be available for the Royal Show.
