AMATEUR BOXING
NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. Per Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, Sept. 28. To-day’s heavy programme in the New Zealand amateur boxing championships began this afternoon, when twelve matches were disposed of, and was continued to-niglrt. Each session has atttracted a large attendance. The boxing has been sound on the whole, but not brilliant, - defence in most cases having received more attention than attack.
The bright spot in last night’s programme was the meeting of C. Raynor (Marlborough) and C. Buckley (Otago), featherweights, in a brilliant bout. Buckley gradually wore his opponent down. W. Purdie (Auckland) and J. Donoghue (Wellington) also gave a skilful display of defensive tactics, in which Purdie prevailed. All bouts but one went tlie full distance. J. Eranldyn, the hard-hitting Gisborne featherweight, knocked out T. Whatnnugh (Wanganui) in the first round. P. Hawes (Christchurch) was another tremendously hard hitter. \> Numerous knockouts marked this evening’s session. One of the most stirring fights was the heavyweight bout between A. J. Bourne (Christchurch) and Prendergast (Invercargill). The southern man felled Bourne in the secondj but Bourne made a great recovery and had Prendergast out on his feet in the end. In another thrilling encounter, B. Turner, of Waitara, defeated G. Manson, of Auckland. R. Purdie (Auckland) was much too clever for N. Kerr (Ashburton). MANAAVATU COMPETITORS. The Taranaki News has the following comments concerning the bouts in which the Manawatu competitors participated on the first evening: Bantamweight.—D. Roebuck (New Plymouth) found L. McLaughlin (Manawatu) a tough opponent, but in a rather uninteresting bout in which most of the fighting took place in close quarters, proved himself just too strong and rugged for the visiting boy. Lightweight.—F. Hopkins (Manawatu) had an advantage in height anil reach over H. Hughes (AVhangarei)
but did not make full use of either and allowed Hughes to force the fighting nearly all tlie way, and this aggressiveness gained him the verdict. Middleweight.—J. Ford (Manawatu) commenced well against A. llasler (Marlborough) but was unlucky enough to run into a right swing and went Gown three times in the first round. After that it was a rather rough and tumble affair with Easier just holding a slight advantage. AYelter weight. —Coolly dominating the ring, M. Candy (Manawatu) found M. Peiclii (AA’eliington) an elusive target, but one that he could hit all the same and took a points decision. A snappy left gained a lot of points, but his right was the dangerous weapon.
