3.30 P.M. EDITION
EMPIRE REPRESENTATIVES,
MR HUGHES’S FIRST SPEECH
(United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph. —Copyright.) Received September 27, 2.20 p.m. LONDON, Sept. 26. The Press Association’s special Geneva correspondent states: —Recognising the urgent need for > reducing the preliminaries, the League Assembly has decided to curtail the plenary meetings as much as possible in order to allow the committees to commence work to-morrow morning. The Assembly meets in the afternoon. Mr AV. M. Hughes will be delivering his first speech which he partially prepared in consultation with Rt. Hon. 8. M. Bruce. Thus, while Mr Hughes makes liis first bow on the Geneva stage as the temporary mouthpiece of the Australian Government, his individuality of style may be cramped by the responsibility of reducing the opportunity of ventilating his strong views on the conduct of the League, of which Mr Hughes personally makes no secret. The Australian and New Zealand deleates attended a meeting of Empire representatives under the chairmanship of Sir John Simon. It informally discussed the Assembly programme, but it is understood that no attempt has yet been made to secure a united front on vital questions fa.cing the League, namely, the SinoJapanese c/mflict, disarmament, the German position and the League budget. ___
