MISSING FUNDS.

DISCLOSURE IN UNITED STATES

■WINNIPEG, Aug. 27. Funds amounting to a million and a quarter dollars of the Church of England diocese of Rupert’s Island and of St. John’s College have been seriously depleted. This was disclosed on Saturday by the heads of the church who started an examination of the books following the arrest two days ago of John Machray, bursar of the University of Manitoba and chancellor of Rupert Island diocese. Only a quarter of a million of the million and a half dollars of the fund is intact. This sum is accredited to tho ecclesiastical province and was not handled by Machray. The remainder of the church trust funds, divided between the bishop’s fund, St. John’s College fund and St. John’s cemetery fund, has been impaired to an alarming extent. Tho clergymen’s retirement fund is also seriously depleted.

A cablegram last week stated that John A. Machray, chairman of tho Board of Governors and bursar of tho University of Manitoba, had been arrested and charged with tho theft of funds of the university’s endowment.
