COTTON OPERATIVES.

STRIKE IN ENGLAND

NEITHER SIDE WILL YIELD

LONDON, Aug. 28. There is little liopo of an immediate settlement of tho cotton strike, although its cost will be £1,500,000 a week. Mr Hamer, chairman of tho employers, declares that if the strike continues, more mills will close and hundreds' of operatives will never get work again. Both sides admit that tho strike will do incalculable harm, yet neither will shift its ground. Negotiations for the settlement of the trouble were abortive, and the operatives have been instructed to act upon tho strike notices. The strike is not expected to cause a complete stoppage in Stalybridge, Hyde, Redclifi'e, Manchester, Todmorton, Oldhame and Rochdale, as temporary working agreements are in operation in those centres. The Minister of Labour says that intervention at this stage is not likely to serve a useful purpose.
