FOXTON

(From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, Aug. 27.

Mr and Mrs R. Frow left Foxton to-day for New Plymouth. Mr Frow has been transferred to the Taranaki town.

Whitebait have been very scarce in the Manawatu River this year, and tho season so far has been the poorest for many years. It is hard to account for this as whitebait have proved plentiful in other quarters. There is a probability that the Presbyterian Church authorities will shortly rearrange the boundaries of tho Foxton charge, and if this proposal is agreed upon it may mean the transfer of Rev. J. A. E. Preston. Upon inquiry by a “Standard” representative it was learned that, while the matter is receiving the attention of the Home Mission Board, no official information has yet been received by the local committee

Tho annual meeting of the Foxton Croquet Club was presided over by Mr W. Trueman, president of the Bowling Club. Speaking to the report, the chairman commented on the very satisfactory condition of the finances and congratulated tho club on being able to start the now season with a credit balance. He also congratulated the winners of last year’s competitions and matches, and hoped to hear of the club sending a team to the inter-club matches next season. Tho balance-sheet showed a credit of £4 18s Bd. The retiring president (Mrs Perreau) thanked the committeo and members for their co-operation during the past term, stating that sho had an enthusiastic committee and had experienced a pleasant season. Sho also spoke of tho capable manner in which the secretary had carried out her duties during the year. A letter was received from tho Bowling Club stating that the Croquet Club would be assessed the sum of £lO for the coming season. This was considered satisfactory. The election of officers resulted: President, Mrs Perreau (re-elected); vice-president, Mrs Symons; secretary, Mrs Owen (re-elected) ; committee, Mesdames Bryant, Newth, Baird, Huntley and Parkes. Mrs Perreau then occupied the chair, and expressed tho club’s thanks to the Bowling Club for the assistance they had rendered in top-dressing both greens," and particularly to Messrs Newth and Chalk for the valuable work they had contributed in this connection. The entertainment, organised by the local “Benedicts,’* at tho Town Hall on Thursday evening attracted a good and appreciative audience. The effort was in aid of the Vol"ntecr Fire Brigade social fund, which will benefit to die extent of upwards of £lO.
