TE ARAKURA WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.
A social evening to augment the hall funds, organised by. the Te Arakura Women’s Institute, was held in the schoolroom on Wednesday evening and provided great pleasure for the large number attending. Mr J. J. Hume, who was M.C., in a short speech stressed the need of a hall in the district and his appreciation of the efforts of the of the gathering. A playette, “Cupid in the Kitchen.” staged by Misses Donald, O'Donnell and Greenhouse, received well merited appreciation. Miss Teale, of Palmerston North, delighted the audience with two recitations, responding to the applause with encore numbers. Miss V. Barltrop, of Feilding, was also vociferously encored for a musical monologue, as were Misses Hazel and Joyce Bennett for a vocal duet. Other popular items included a violin and piano duet by Misses Marion Bennett and Elvira Bennett; recitations by Mr H. Bowater; songs by Misses Marion Bennett and K. Slater and Mrs R. Stewart. Community singing, led by Mrs Stewart, completed an enjoyable programme. Miss Elvira Bennett was the accompaniste for all the items. A delicious supper was later served by the junior members of the institute. Competitions were won as follow: Cake, Mrs N. Campbell; pennies in jar. Messrs J. O’Donnell and Jack Baxter, a tie; candle lighting, Mr C. Gordon Glassford, a knitted cushion being tlie prize. Both from the financial and social points of view the success of the evening was most gratifying and the thanks of the hall committee are due to all those who helped towards the satisfactory result.
