STATE EDUCATION.
COMMENT IN NEW SOUTH WALES.
The importance of education in relation to the general position of the State was referred to by the Minister for Education for New South Wales (Mr Drummond) speaking to the Farmers and Settlers’ Association Conference. He pointed out that certain economies which might not be popular would have to be carried out.
Mr Drummond said that, if the country was to maintain its position, it must educate its children so that they would be capable of holding their own against the rest of the world. But there were some frills that would have to be cut out, and people able to bear a reasonable share of the cost of education must be made to do so. Ho would watch the expenditure so that taxes were not increased. He would endeavour to give the maximum education at a minimum cost to the taxpayer. Education was costing more than the total income tax likely to be collected for 1932-3.
