MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

Beforo Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court to-day, J. Peris, a cook, appeared to answer charges that he had been found drunk in Main Street, and also with using obsoene language in a public place. Accused, for whom Mr Ongley appeared, elected to bo dealt with summarily, and pleaded guilty to both charges. SeniorSergeant WlntclioiiKO said accused had a formidable list of previous convictions. Mr Ongley stated that accused had only recently arrived in Palmerston North and had taken premises in Main Street which he intended carrying on business in. After stocking up the shop yesterday ho hail left the key with the peoplo next door. Ho had returned later under the influence of liquor and, for some reason the key had been refused, the excuse being made that it had been given to a taxi driver. An argument had ensued and the langngo complained of had been used. Accused had 710 recollection of it. On perusing the list of previous convictions, tlio Magistrate remarked that lie did not know whether a man of his type was wanted in Palmerston North, and he inflicted a fine of 5s in default 24 hours’ detention on the charge of drunkenness, and a month’s imprisonment with hard labour on the second chargo. A. J. Plier was charged with having been found drunk in Main Street, and also with wilfully committing damage to a cell utensil to the value of 6s Gd. Pleas of guilty were entered on both clvirges. A fine of ss, in default 24 hours’ imprisonment, was imposed on the charge of drunkenness, while accused was ordered to pay the cost of the damage he had committed, in default 48 hours’ imprisonment. r T Roberts was charged that, at Christchurch on August 16, with intent to defraud by means of a valueless cheque for £5, drawn on a Teniuka bank, he had obtained the sum of £o in money from M. Scollard. On the application of Detective Russell accused was remanded to appear again on September 2.
