PAHIATUA, Aug. 25.
Airs Bell, Wellington, is staying with her sister, Airs L. Tattle, Pahiatua. Air and Airs G. 11. Hodd motored to-day to Tutira, Hawke’s Buy. Aliss AL Wright, Alangatainoka, lias returned home uftor spending an extended holiduy with her sister, Airs F. D. Jones, Paengaroa, Bay of Plenty. At tho ripo old ago of 96 years, there passed away oil Tuesday evening at the Pahiatua Public Hospital one who had bocome a well-known identity to patients and visitors alike, Air Benjamin Burnley. Tho late Air Burnley came to New Zealand about 45 years ago from Bradford, Yorkshire. After living at Petone for over 20 years ho camo to resido with his daughter, Mrs A. Harrington, at Alangatainoka, whore ho carried on his business at tho residence till about eight or nine years ago when ho was stricken down. Ho was in the Pahiatua Public Hospital at varying intervals and about five years ago he again entered tho institution and had been an inmate over since. Whilst a resident of Alangatainoka tho deceased was a keen member of St. Alark’s Anglican Church, and a regular communicant. Ho took an interest, too, in the choir. . Tho annual hockey coinpettion for tho Thrupp Cup which is played at tho conclusion of tho season’s club competition, was staged yesterday on tho Swifts (holders) ground, at Hainua. Seven teams entered, Woodvillo being tho only defection. The final between Swifts and Ekotahuna did not prove as inspiring as expected. No doubt tho previous hard game with Huia had sapped somo of Eketahuna’s stamina. They did not play so well against Swifts, who obtained two goals before the final whistle. The men’s < hainpionship was won by Huimai this season. Tho runners up wero Star and Woodvillo, who played off yestorday for second placo, Star beating Woodvilie 4—2. Tho match, was staged at Woodvillo. Patrons at the anniversary ball of tho Foresters’ Lodge, held last night in the Foresters’ Hall, spent an enjoyable time. The brethren and sisters wero attired in regalia, and sister lodges were well represented. Visitors camo from Dannevirke, Palmerston North, Woodvillo and Eketuliuna. Tho hall was tastefully decorated and tho floor was in splendid order. Extras wero played by Bro. G. Lawton and Air I. Priest. Tho dancing was under tho control of Brothers L. Parker, C.R., G. Lawton, 1.P.C.R., and J. O’Brien, S.C.R. A Alontc Carlo waltz waa won by Air Jensen and Aliss G. Bakor. . A largo crowd, representative ot l no many families of Nireulia, gathored at tho local hull on Friday night hut, to bid farewell to Aliss L. M. Wadsworth who has been a popular membor of the stair of tho Xiroaha school for a period of three years. Mr R, Thomasen, chairman of tho Nireaha School Committee, on behalf of the residents of Nireaha, voiced lus regret at All*. Wadsworth’s departure ami asked her o accept a travelling rug as a small memento of hor rsidonce in tho district. Alus worth was also presented with a magnificent bouquet by little Aliss Shirley Alason.
