ITEMS FROMAWAPUNI. (By “Binocular.”) With the local Hunt meeting and spring fixtures drawing nigh, mentors at Awapuni are speeding up tho operations of their charges. With 30 odd horses engaged at tho Hunt meeting, local stables should play a part. Yesterday morning Santoft, Yythan and Laokoon finished in that order, a head and a neck being tho dividing margins at the end of five furlongs run in 1.8 2-5. Laokoon, who has not been himself, is commencing to round off again. Trojan Melody securod the bettor of the jump-out in a half mile scamper with Chief Marionette, and although the filly finished resolutely she could not roach her partner. Trojan Melody is revelling in his work. Guerestor, who had the inside running, led Riotous across the top and half way home, but tho Birkdale gelding finished the stronger to complete the mile in 1.50 3-5. It wus, nevertheless, an improved performance on the part of Guerestor. Morrath and Thrasher led Headland throughout in a five furlongs gallop, running tho last threo furlongs in 42secs. Headland has been given a course of treatment and he looks much brighter as a result. Patearoa, Minstrel Lad and Brilliant Light were partners over six furlongs, while Decree Nisi joined in at the half mile post. Patearoa was a couple of lengths clear of Minstrel Lad, Brilliant Light having retired threo furlongs from home. Brilliant Light, who has come back after a long spell, is carrying much more condition than he originally did. Tho two hunters, Trouble and Acrevate, were associated over a couple of rounds at a steady pace. The former will race at the Taranaki fixture prior to the local Hunt, but at a difference of 191br> Acrevate promises to offer considerable opposition in the Manawatu Hunt Cup. GENERAL. Commentator looks nono the worse for the fall he experienced at tho Pakuratiga Hunt meeting. He bowled along quite freely in pacework on one ot tlie inner tracks. . . , Gran Chaco is at present looking in. good order and ho came home over tne linal stages of a mile very strongly. While tie has been somewhat ot a disappointment, Gran Chaco may bo given an opportunity to make amends over a distance, j Nebulae, a three-year : old by I Hunting Song —ltamos in J. P. Coyles . stable, has been showing signs of lameness in the stifle. While he had only one outing as a two-year-old, Nebulae has always displayed plenty of pace in his track work. Glen Roosie, who was a good performer tor 1 Messrs Trevor and McMillan a couple of season’s back, has been leased by . Mr I'irevor to Wallace Young, of Hastings. • The Acre gelding originally developed blood poisoning on a trip to Kiccarton, but he is stated to be quite himself again. J. Manuel has Lady Court and tho three-ycar-old Sir Romeo in work and both are looking ill good order. The youngster, who has yet to race, has built up considerably since being added to the list. Beau Gallante, who was a member of the string which G. W. Now brought over from Australia in 1930, will probably have his first race at the Manawatu Hunt fixture. Posscsing plenty of bone, lie looks an ideal cut ior a steeplechaser. La Moderne is still at Awapuni and nothing definite has been announced relative to her future, although she has been inspected by a veterinary surgeon and contemplating buyers more than once. Ino filly looks a picture and was revelling in her work yesterday morning. , M. H. Nicol has secured his trainers license and ho is now supervising the training operations of Adventus and a fiaß--1 Bister to tho defunct Princess Betty. Adiventus had to forgo his Grand National enigagements, but ho looks quite lnmselt again. PROMISING YOUNGSTERS. Whilo Awapuni has not tho same num- ' her of two-year-olds in work as in former seasons, which was not unexpected in view of tho prevailing conditions, this centre promises to be, nevertheless, well to the j fore where tho youngsters are concerned I when the spring ‘racing is entered upon. 1 Mrs McDonald, who invariably possesses ' one or more outstanding two-year-olds, has a strong string once again, and indications are that tho Australian-bred Rosewing— Lin lass filly, and tho Lord Quex— Oddity
filly will show superior early form. J. P. Coyle has a brace of nice ones in After Money, by Paper Money—Afterglow, and a Marchalong colt. The former is a racy looking customer, whereas tho lattor attracts by reason of his solid frame. The arrival of Luke Wilson from Hastings has added to the ranks a particiularly fine-look-ing two-year-old in the Chief Ruler—Doree filly, for whom tho name of Princess Doreen has been claimed. His other representative, a Lord Quex—Catalini gelding, does not impress to the same extent. On the score of appearance, the half-sister to Princess Betty in M. Nicol’s charge has still to prove that sho is of the calibre of the chestnut whose career was brought to a closo as the result of an accident in Australia. In addition to the above, Royal Guy (Royal Divorce —Panette), a Lackham — Truney gelding, Hugo (Nigger Minstrel — Pleasuro), a Hunting Song—Bayou gelding, a Lord Quex —Novoko gelding, and a Colossus—Sanguinaria colt will all be found figuring in early spring engagements when a more definite line will be obtained as to their capabilities. However, it is evident that the centre should be again worthily represented. MARTON WEIGHTS. Weights for tho spring meeting of the Marton Jockey Club have been declared by Mr 11.
