RUGBY FOOTBALL.

MAXAYVATU SENIOR COMPETITION. Owing to the intervention of a representative engagement, Manawhenua being down to oppose Wairarapa in tho first of the home and homo games at Masterton to-morrow, the final game to decide the local senior championship will be deferred meantime. However, senior players will enter upon the Goldfinch and Cousins Cup series which, instead of being tho usual “sudden-death” competition, will bo plavod over a full round as is the case in tho junior series. Two senior matches will be presented on tho oval, tho Old Boys and Massey College fifteens figuring in the early game, with Kia Toa and United taking the field at 3 p.m. Spectators should bo treated to some interesting play _in these games, while another contest which should have a following of supporters is that between Bunnythorpe and St. Patrick’s, which will determine tho runners-up to Woodvillo in tho junior inter-club competition. The defection of Le Quesno and Henry has weakened to some extent the frontal division of the side which is to represent Manawhenua versus Wairarapa at Masterto to-morrow, but the sido reads a reasonably strong one and the only real disadvantage appears to be the absence _of combination. While the inability to bring the members together may tell against them the experience should at least prose beneficial for tho return meeting between the two unions at Palmerston North on September 10 and for the other engagements which Manawhenua claims latei,.The Manawhenua team now reads. Fullback, Barrett; three-quarters, Elliott, Meta Johnfon Cooke; five-eighths, Olliver, Bratnwe ; half Irvine; forwards, back rank, Mitchell; second row, Ropata, Fraser-Sm , McKenzie, Palmer; front row, McDonald, Roddick, Cooper. Emergencies: Strange, Campbell (backs); Ogier (forward). The team will leave Palmerston North by motor car at 9 a.m„ returning the same evening. _ SCHOOLBOYS RETURN. FROM ANNUAL TOURNEY. After being away from their homes lor the post six days, during vhioh period

their time was fully employed, tho Manawatu primary schools' representatives who had been participating in the annual Itugby tourney at Wellington, yesterday returned to Palmerston North. The tourney was entered upon at Athletic Park on Satur- . day last, when Manawatu defeated Wanganui by nine points to six. In the afternoon the four representative teams were tho guests of the Wellington Rugby Union at tho championship linal between Poneke and Petone. In the evening they were taken to a theatre. There was no official programme on the Sunday but on Monday morning the mombers of tho teams were taken on a motor bus trip round Wellington and suburbs. The weather was not what it might have been, but the thuo-hour trip was most enjoyable in spire of tho southerly buster. In the afternoon two more games j were played, Wanganui accounting for Wellington 6—o and Wairarapa defeating Manawatu by 6—3. It was intended to have played these games at Athletic Park, but the ground was totally unfit for play and the sandy area at Lyall Bay was utilised. The ground was dry and no rain fell during the progress of the games, but a howling gale, blowing across the field, interfered to such an extent that in one match the ball was only once on the weathor side of the ground during the 60 minutes’ play. There was a three-point margin in tno Manawatu-Wairarnpa game but .Manawatu were unfortunate to lose their full-

back (Rush) early in the first spell, and to have two forwards injured during the second spell, both having to receive attention. In the first spoil Manawatu had tho territorial advantage and not long before half time was sounded Young got (over following a looso forward rush to tho line. After the change over however, the i Wairarapa boys had tho better of the play and after wiping oil the deficit about half way through they scored the winning points about a minute and a-half before full-time. One movement by Manajwittu should have resulted in a try. Wairarapa had not long brought the scores level when Lee, tho Manawatu half-back, secured the liall from a set scrum close to , the Wairarapa line. Ho worked the blind | sido and after drawing the defence, sent i a beautiful pass along to Brassy, the wing j three-quarter going over unopposed near 'the corner. Brassey failed to recognise J that ho was over and he hesitated a mo- : ment, giving Wairarapa tho chance to push i iiiin into touch-in-goal. The boys were taken to see the Petone [railway workshops on tho Tuesday inornl'ing, getting back to the city at noon. It i was intended that after lunch they should , 'visit the motor liner Rangitata as tho , guests of the Union Steamship Company, but this fixture was abandoned on acoount of tho vessel's delay at Lyttelton. As far • as football was concerned, Tuesday was , j an oil' clay. In the evening the boys were . taken to a theatre. a n Wednesday morning the teams were

taken over a match factory and the city milk depot and in the afternoon the final frames were played, each team having Secured a win and suffered a lose, the second time this has occurred since the inception of the competition some 17 years ago. Wairarapa defeated Wanganui by nine to eight, Wairarapa’ 3 winning try coming after time was up, the ball not having become dead. In the other game Wellington accounted for Manawatu by six points (two triesl to nil. The game was played at Athletic Park, the ground being in good condition and the afternoon line and comparatively calm. The Manawatu team was up to full strength, but Hush, the full-back, had a Jjandaged knee, and I>ee, the half-back, was suffering from the effects of a Kick received earlier in the tournament. Wellington thoroughly deserved their win, but the Manawatu forwards were not, able to reproduce their usual dash. WIN FOR HAWKE’S BAY. Per Press Association. GISBORNE, Aug. 25. The Hawke’s Bay Rugby fifteen, defeated East Coast at Rautoria to-day by 14 points to 8.
