PRESIDENT VISITED
3.30 P.M. EDITION
AUSTRALIANS IN UNITED
STATES
(United Press Association —By Electric
Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received August 26, 2.35 p.m. NEW VUKK, Aug. 25,
Messrs Bruce and Gullett, the Australian delegates to the imperial Economic Conference at Ottawa, spent 45 minutes with President Hoover at White House while Mrs Hoover entertained Mesdames Bruce and Gullett. Mr Hoover, attired in white flannels and a dark coat, received the Ministers with complete informality, saying that he always ielt at home with Australians. Both Mr and Mrs Hoover have a lively recollection of their stay in Australia and show close knowledge of her difficulties. Mr Bruce and Mr Hooter had a long, pleasant discussion regarding the World Monetary Conference. Mr Bruce indicated how greatly Australia appreciated that, at this conference, there was going to he complete co-operation by the United States. Mr Bruce said that any international conference at which the United States was not represented was incomplete. Without American cooperation the problems afflicting the world could not be solved.
As a special compliment. President Hoover did net receive Messrs Bruce and Gullett in the state apartment or executive offices, but took them into his private apartments, which normally are inaccessible to all but his closest personal friends. The visitors were impressed by the severity of the furnishings and the simplicity of the private life at White House.
In taking leave of the visitors, President Hoover, who is about to set forth on a nation-wide campaign tour, expressed deep pleasure of seeing the distinguished Australians, and also at renewing his acquaintance with Mr Bruce whom he met in 1927 when Secretary of Commerce. He added that he is intensely interested in learning bow Australia is surmounting her difficulties.
An earlier message relating to the visit to the President appears on page 7.
