Over 2000 head of sheep and 170 head of cattle, all in excellent condition were dispatched by special vessel to a favourable market at Sydney. Included in the stock wero 1003 sheep and 71 head of cattle from Longburn. New Zealand crossbred wethers made from 26s to 40s at Sydney and bullocks up to £23 15s, the average being nearly £22. . ... The Minister of Education, in Ins annual report, stated, that the total averago number of pupils ill public schools was 111,797. There were 1677 schools open at the end of 1901. Exclusive of sewing mistresses, there were 3623 teachers employed, and the total of all salaries at tire end of the vear was £378,596. There had been ‘a fivefold increase during the year of classes for manual instruction. The necessity for making definite provision for the training of teachers was emphasised. Nine surveyors selected by the New Zealand Government at the request of the Imperial authorities for work on the Gold Coast, South Africa, left Auckland for their new posts. A London message stated that Sir George White endorsed General Erenclr’s recommendation of General lan Hamilton for a Victoria Cross in the Boer War. The authorities ruled that General Hamilton was too senior for the award.
