EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” AUGUST 25, 1902.
The Tokomaru School had lieen closed for eleven weeks owing to scarlet fever in the district. Big prices were reported to be ruling lor pigs on the local market with weaners at 8s 6d to 11s (id, slips 16s (id to £l, and good stores scarce. The matter of increasing its shed accommodation was considered by tho Manawatu A. and P. Association. It was decided to erect two buildings, each 150 feet by 30 feet, on the east sido of tho ground. They were to be so erected that they would ultimately form annexes on one sido of a large main hall. The growth of the exhibition had rendered the provision of further covered space essential. ’The export of frozen meat from New Zealand was increasing. During tho six months ended June 30, 1,131,969 carcases of mutton had been exported, compared with 832,603 in the previous six months. Sir Wilfrid Laurier ,the Canadian Premier, speaking at Paris, advocated an Anglo-French Alliance as a guarantee of universal peace. He advocated reciprocal preferences arid minimum tariffs between Franco and Canada.
