FALSE PRETENCES.
SENTENCE OF THREE MONTHS.
Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, Aug. 24
"It is clear that this man is no amateur in crime,” stated Mr Bartholomew, S.M., iu the Police _ Court, ■when sentencing Ernest Maurice Mason, alias Lynch, alias Captain St. Clair to three months’ gaol for false pretences at Otorohanga and Rotorua. The police stated that accused obtained £1 at the former place from a Mr Banfield and credit at Rotorua from Miss Jennie Douling, a boardinghouse keeper. He represented that lie was organising a Rotorua branch of tho St. John Ambulance, then disappearing till he was arrested here, where lie stated he was a medical student and had come to Dunedin to sit for an examination. He also stated that his father had died leaving him £IIUO.
